Liberación, Hecho A Mano
3” x 4.15” Vinyl Sticker
Inspired by my grandmother, and great grandmother.
Big Nana suddenly became a single mother of twelve, with no income. She made the difficult decision to sell their property in Tecate, and move north to Tijuana—where she went into business for herself running a taquería—and made enough money to keep the family fed and housed. Nana tells me stories about going to the restaurant every day after school to help her mother make tortillas, hundreds of them, by hand.
In TJ, the taquería business was—and still is—fiercely competitive and overwhelmingly male-dominated. A taco stand run by a woman and
her daughter was almost unheard of. But their cooking spoke for itself.
Word spread quickly, and soon their little stand drew long lines and loyal customers. Their success stirred envy among neighboring vendors, who seized every opportunity to sabotage Big Nana’s taquería. But she and my Nana never let discouragement take root. They pressed forward—resilient and resolute—one tortilla at a time.
